Charm is plentiful at Bartolotta's Lake Park Bistro, perched atop a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan. But executive chef Adam Siegel's country French food, expertly made with Miles Borghgraef as chef de cuisine, will bring your attention back to the plate.

Beef tartare is delicious, hand chopped and combined with mustard and egg yolk; a salad of thin green beans, frisee, preserved tomatoes and creamy feta, dressed in lemon and olive oil, was right for summer. Everything about grilled lamb T-bones was perfect, down to the airy bearnaise; likewise a special of Atlantic hake, a beautiful piece of fish treated well.

Lovely desserts included a walnut cakelet, honeyed and dense, that hid tender pear in its base. And it's an impressive list of French wines here. The vast majority are more than $50 a bottle; if I were to splurge, I'd sit at the bar, share the plenty-for-two rotisserie chicken with mushrooms and potato puree, and order a beautiful bottle.
